Un coup d'oeil sur le site:Citergenerating new work units
Hi Everyone,
It's been awhile but I've generated some new work units today, to test how things are going and if we need to make any updates to the application. We have some new data that we're looking forward to analyzing to try and find areas of DNA that might cause cancer in humans (although the data set we'll be working with is from mice).
I'll keep you all posted as we start generating more work, and let me know if there are any problems with the work units that I just sent out.
cheers,

A bientôt
Travis
The goal of DNA@Home is to discover what regulates the genes in DNA. Ever notice that skin cells are different from a muscle cells, which are different from a bone cells, even though every cell in your body has every gene in your genome? That's because not all genes are "on" all the time. Depending on the cell type and what the cell is trying to do at any given moment, only a subset of the genes are used, and the remainder are shut off.je me demande si ça ne fait pas doublon avec RNA World :??:
Fascinatingly, the initial analysis of the human genome sequence revealed that, apparently, only a very small fraction of the DNA of our genome is encoding proteins. Scientists at first thought "what is all this junk DNA about?" or "can't we just delete it?". Today, it has become clear that probably a major fraction of regulatory events taking place in a human cell might be governed by small RNAs, the so-called miRNAs. Among other functions, these appear responsible for making sure that a skin cell becomes a skin cell while a muscle, liver or hair cell differentiates to a muscle, liver or hair cell during development and all this although the genetic material (DNA) of all of these very different cell types is essentially identical.
The goal of this RNA World sub-project is to systematically identify all known RNA family members in all organisms known to date and make the results available to the public in a timely fashion
Our software looks for short sequences of nucleotides that appear more-or-less the same near multiple gene beginnings and which also appear more-or-less the same in the corresponding locations in the genomes of related species.

Finally an update -- checkpointing working in the application
So I didn't want to send out any workunits until I got checkpointing working, and good news after a couple long weeks and not to mention slamming my head against my computer a few times, the DNA@Home client application has working checkpointing.
This means we should have workunits being sent out within a week or so. We've also gotten the data we need for the Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome, so the first workunits will be doing work on a real genome as opposed to test data.
Expect updates more frequently now that I finally have something working.

:bounce:

Je pense que oui. :D
Our current plans involve tackling the Mycobacterium tuberculosis genome to thoroughly understand how tuberculosis accomplishes what it does -- so that others can use that information to stop this disease that kills millions every year. We also plan to tackle Yersinia pestis, the cause of bubonic plague.

Since I've implemented BOINCs new credit policy on milkyway@home for the nbody application, I'm also testing it here. It will probably take awhile for the credit to get fully adjusted, and since we're in alpha i'm going to be multiplying it by 5. If you have any problems with it, let me know.

status update
Just had a long meeting today -- I think we've come up with a strategy for making workunits available in a more consistent manner. Should be updating the server code this week, and then expect a bunch of workunits.
--Travis1 Jun 2011 | 22:50:57 UTC · Comment
Work flowing again!
Finally, we have some new workunits for you guys to crunch. I'm hoping to make some changes in the next few weeks that will get a much more steady flow of workunits out to everyone.
--Travis 24 Aug 2011 | 19:40:06 UTC
:hyperbon:
some updates
Hi Everyone,
The last couple weeks have been hectic! I was off in NY to give a presentation at IBM T.J. Watson Research center. Now that I'm back I have a few more updates for everyone.
First, I've made a portal on the front page of this volunteer computing server with links to the other projects we'll be running here: http://volunteer.cs.und.edu/index.html
Notably, SubsetSum@Home and Wildlife@Home. We're starting to get video for wildlife@home, which should prove really interesting so it might be worth taking a look at that project over there. I'll also be starting to send out workunits for SubsetSum@Home by the end of the week (as we have a deadline for a conference and would like to have the project running by then). After SubsetSum@Home is up and sending out workunits, I'll be updating the client application here (to fix the checkpointing issue) and sending out some more workunits.
Until then, hopefully the videos we'll be putting up on wildlife@home will keep you interested, and the workunits at subsetsum@home will keep your computers busy. :)
--Travis 11 Apr 2012 | 18:31:28 UTC
So I want to try and start unifying the projects to simplify server updates, checking the forums, etc. Before I get going I want a little feedback as to what I'm planning so everyone is okay with it.
Basically, I'm going to create a new project (probably called "Citizen Science Grid") or something along those lines. Unfortunately, because people have different accounts on each project I can't do an automatic merge of the users and databases. So this means you'd have to create a new account on the new project (when the new project starts those will be the only forums for the site).
When the new project is up and going, I'll allow everyone to transfer their credit from their other accounts via a webpage (basically if you're logged in, you can enter in the user name and id of your account on citizen science grid, hit okay and it will transfer the credit over). So a couple questions about this approach:
1. will it break the credit trackers too badly? I'll subtract credit on the old project to 0, and then add the same amount of credit to the new account on citizen science grid.
2. I kind of want to keep credit for the different projects separate; if I keep different tables and export the stats of each project as it's own part of XML, will that cause any problems? Or would everyone rather just have one combined credit for each of the projects here (Wildlife@Home, DNA@Home, and SubsetSum@Home -- we'll probably be launching another one in the fall as well, so I want to get this done before we go doing that).
So, once I get some feedback, and if people don't have too many issues with this I'll set up the new project and get things started. Otherwise back to the drawing board. :P
thanks, hope to hear from you soon about this!
