Firstly I'd like to thank you all for helping me by testing the next theSkyNet project.
This first test run will only process 6 Galaxies (NGC 1209, NGC2500, NGC2537, NGC2541, NGC2798, NGC6240 & NGC6384).
The system is running under AWS using a grant I won from Amazon (thank you Amazon) on micro instances just to prove things are wording and we're getting good science out the other end.
We now have 27 users which should be enough for this run.Si on est déjà de trop ... :cpopossib:

Ladies and Gentlemen
I have a simple question. Is there anything I, as the science geek, could provide that would make this type of project more appealing. My first thought was showing you on the real (false colour) images of the galaxies you've been processing, with the bits you actually did shown and what we found out.
Other ideas are to link it into google sky http://www.google.com/sky/ (http://www.google.com/sky/) so you can see where in the sky that particular galaxy is.
Anything else you can think of?

I now have 88 testers - you guys are awesome. I'm really surprised that my t1.micro instance on AWS (the free one) is coping nicely - peak CPU load is only 30%. The BOINC developers have down a fantastic job of minimising the CPU requirements on the servers.http://ec2-23-23-126-96.compute-1.amazonaws.com/pogs/forum_thread.php?id=22 (http://ec2-23-23-126-96.compute-1.amazonaws.com/pogs/forum_thread.php?id=22)
I've closed account creation now - as I only have 6 galaxies prepared and we're already 1/2 way through it in 3 days!!! I'll speak to my colleagues at Johns Hopkins to see if we can get some more as validation does not appear consistent Windows & OS X seem ok, but Linux appears variable.
Hello,
First, the courage to start this project ...
1 / Is it an extension of the project theskynet?
2 / Is it possible to simplify and make more attractive the url of the project?
3 / Apparently there is a GPU implementation in preparation, it will be for AMD and Nvidia?
Thank you for your answers and hello to all the team ....

Version 2.00
I've fixed a few of the problems you folks have identified.
The F77 does not produce numbers to as many decimal places
The validator is more flexible and should now be happy with *Nix vs Windows generated numbers
I've supplemented the checkpointing with my own so we can really see what is happening
Moved up to the m1.small AWS instance
The weird time estimates on the wrapper is proving a thorny one. 7 Aug 2012 | 9:07:55 UTC
New Work units
We found one of the filters was incorrect so I've released all the galaxies as new work units.
The new work units have my scaling factor in to make things more comparable with Cobblestones.
You can ditch any existing work units you are processing with a "Project Reset" to make sure you have all the correct models loaded.

New galaxiesDans la langue de Molière...
Folks
We're ready to go with the new galaxies, we're just waiting for the last few results of the old run to come in. We've made a number of improvements:
1) The F77 records more probability data than before;
2) We've decided to push the redshift out to 0.1;
3) The next run is pure PanSTARRS1 data;
4) The 64bit Windows code should be a lot faster;
5) A improvement to the Cobblestone scaling to look at the number of layers you are processing as well as the number of pixels.
WARNING: The model files have grown in size so you'll get a once of down load of 20MB (gzipped)
Nouvelles galaxies
Chers amis,
1) Les 'F77' enregistrent plus de données probabilistes qu'avant;
2) Nous avons décidé de pousser le 'redshift' au delà de 0.1;
3) Le prochain run provient uniquement des données du PanSTARRS1;
No more galaxies for a couple of daysprochaines UTs: mercredi ou jeudi :/
The database is now 200GB and I need to do some housekeeping to extend it for the next run. Should be back again by Wednesday or Thursday. 13 Oct 2012 | 22:59:58 UTC

About to run out of WUs
We're about to run out of data.
David and I need to analysis the results of the last three runs as this will influence the pipeline for the full run. So it may be a few days before we get more data for you to crunch
I just remembered this thread, so I've tested it.
To attach a new computer, just change the password.
And because there's a bug in that part of the code, the process lets you use the old password again. The page even fills in the first part for you, so that you just need to put it in the "Enter password again" window.
:kookoo: Trad :Oui c'est compréhensible je comprend chaque mot mais.................................. :cpopossib: :??:

We are starting a new run (suffix 'f') of the same test galaxies featured in the early science post. This time we're including SDSS-u imaging as a complement to the PS1 grizy spectral coverage. A similar run was done earlier, but now we're incorporating realistic uncertainties for all filters. The new run will tell us how accurately we can constrain our derived physical parameters using PS1 alone for high-resolution runs. After this test we will finally work on some other galaxies -- having finished important checks with the limited sample.je ferais bientot une trad des résultats qu'ils ont obtenus récemment
We're also now running on a dual server configuration in the AWS cloud. This will give us some measure of how we can scale out this project as more users come on-board

Hello everyone! Welcome to another update on theSkyNet's progress. A lot has been going on in our world since our last update in September, but before we get started, we want to ask for your help.
Request for Feedback TheSkyNet website is currently undergoing a complete rebuild thanks to the hard work of our new web programmer, Alex (we introduce you to Alex below). While Alex is redoing everything from scratch we thought it was the perfect opportunity to ask our members how we're going and take suggestions about what we should do with theSkyNet in the future.
So, we've put together a survey to ask for your feedback and suggestions (and a little about you) to help us make theSkyNet the best it can be. Kirsten, from our communications team, is also doing a bit of research into why all our lovely members actually became members in the first place, so there's also a few questions in the survey asking about your reasons for joining theSkyNet.
All survey responses are anonymous, and your feedback will be gratefully received, so we hope you can help us out.
Take the survey now! (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=ec6f993bdc&e=ea63748e0f)
TheSkyNet News We'd have to say that our most exciting piece of news since we last spoke to you all is that we have gained our first full time team member for theSkyNet! Meet Alex Beckley, theSkyNet's new web programmer. Alex joined us late last year and has been working hard ever since to fix bugs and smooth out the operations of theSkyNet's website. Now that that's under control, Alex's next task is a complete rebuild of theSkyNet's website from the ground up. He'll be rewriting everything to be slicker, smoother and more efficient. He'll also be bringing our theSkyNet POGS members into the fold by integrating our BOINC project into the new site as well (more on BOINC below).
Alex has big plans for theSkyNet site, not least of which is a great interface for our members to access all the stats they could dream of about their contributions to theSkyNet. He'll also be including an API so the stats can be extracted so you can make your own awesome graphics and charts to show off your contributions.
If you have ideas for what you'd like to see included in the new site, or what statistics you'd like to be able to access, then please let us know. The feedback survey (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=2500aae00b&e=ea63748e0f) is a great place to do it, or you can contact us via the forums (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=b3391eb9c7&e=ea63748e0f) (Alex is @eckley & Kirsten is @kirsten) or our contact form (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=f4db663dc3&e=ea63748e0f).
We can't wait to be back in the coming months announcing the launch of the new and vastly improved site, and we're especially looking forward to having all the ways to contribute to theSkyNet together in one place.
TheSkyNet on BOINC If you've been around theSkyNet's forums any time in the last 10 months you may have seen the announcement that we were testing a new way to donate to theSkyNet - BOINC. (Announcement and call for testers here (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=b67f3ecb5f&e=ea63748e0f).) The BOINC project is referred to as theSkyNet POGS (from the Pan-STARRS1 Optical Galaxy Survey) and processes visible, infrared and UV images of galaxies to determine a host of their different astronomical properties.
The testing has been going really well, so well in fact that we have some incredible numbers to share with you. Since the BOINC project started testing in August last year, 5,178 galaxies have been processed. This was split up into 1,653,212 processing areas which saw 27,838,230 pixels analysed and 410,613,660 results returned to the science team that's based in Australia and the United States. Needless to say, with results like that we're sure it's working very well! As we said above, we simply can't wait to get the BOINC project (and its credits) integrated with theSkyNet website. We'll be sure to announce that as soon as it happens, but in the mean time you can read a bit more about the continued testing at theSkyNet POGS (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=4a2082bc5d&e=ea63748e0f) site.
We'd also like to take this opportunity to thank theSkyNet member Daniel Carrion for some fantastic work on theSkyNet's BOINC project. One of the great features of theSkyNet POGS is a downloadable report that shows you what galaxy images you've worked on as well as some facts and figures on those galaxies. The code to produce these (as well as some prototype GPU code) was produced by Daniel, and if you've had a go at theSkyNet POGS and seen the reports, you'll understand why we're extremely grateful to have him helping us out. Thank you again, Daniel!
Member's Corner You may remember from our 1 year update (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=924561d189&e=ea63748e0f) that we awarded the trip of a lifetime to our top user - Kim, or vk5fj - as part of our anniversary celebrations. Well, in October last year we had Kim join us in Perth for a few days so we could head to the Murchison Radio-astronomy Observatory in Mid West Western Australia and see first hand one of the reasons theSkyNet exists - the next generation telescopes that are under construction up there.
We spent one day on site with Kim visiting CSIRO's Australian SKA Pathfinder, where the CSIRO folk were generous enough to give us the full guided tour (and even let Kim drive one of the ASKAP dishes!) We also visited the Murchison Widefield Array, which launched soon after we were there in November. (Hint hint, some of the amazing Solar data from the MWA might be making it's way onto theSkyNet in the future, watch this space!)
There are more details of Kim's time in the Murchison (including photos and a video) on the ICRAR website (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=7dbbeb88d6&e=ea63748e0f), and there is also a blog post (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=114fb23403&e=ea63748e0f) of Kim's trip up to the Murchison.
That's it from theSkyNet team today. As always if there's something you'd like to see in theSkyNet, or something isn't working as expected you can let us know through our contact form (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=2e588142b2&e=ea63748e0f), or on the forums (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=1935ae01d9&e=ea63748e0f). Also, please don't forget to spend a few minutes giving us your feedback (http://theSkyNet.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d50a906304a3c9a1573e8d32e&id=e59667fd4f&e=ea63748e0f) so we can get better at what we do. Thank you!

TheSkyNet on BOINC If you've been around theSkyNet's forums any time in the last 10 months you may have seen the announcement that we were testing a new way to donate to theSkyNet - BOINC. (Announcement and call for testers here.) The BOINC project is referred to as theSkyNet POGS (from the Pan-STARRS1 Optical Galaxy Survey) and processes visible, infrared and UV images of galaxies to determine a host of their different astronomical properties.
We'll be sure to announce that as soon as it happens, but in the mean time you can read a bit more about the continued testing at theSkyNet POGS site.
Updates
Our first paper about this project is available for those that are interested at arXiv.org (http://arxiv.org/abs/1306.1618). This is just a detailed description of the project and the results to date.
We're working on a purely science focused one at the moment.
Depending on the budget available for next year (my AWS grant has run out) - we hope to:
get the GPU version finished in OpenCL
get an improved multi-thread CPU version built
get a true native client working
improve the server speed (and remove the dependency on the more expensive AWS components)
integrate with theSkyNet
move to our own sub-domain

Salut al@ON,

We're currently processing PS1 only images of galaxies in NED with RA = 10-20 deg, DEC = -30-80 deg, and NED diameter of 1-3 arcmin.
I've just queued another 705 PS1 only images of galaxies in NED with RA = 20-30 deg, DEC = -30-80 deg, and NED diameter of 1-3 arcmin.
You folks are currently processing just over 100 galaxies a day. At this rate we'll finish the survey in 2-3 years.
Bien sur qu'il y a pleins de méthodes :jap: --------------------->> http://www.sky-map.org/ :D

There is a thread in the forum at TheSkyNet (http://forums.theskynet.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&p=2862) regarding teams/alliances in TSN and/or POGS.
You are listed twice in the alliances: L’Alliance Francophone (http://www.theskynet.org/alliances/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&locale=en&search=francophone)
The admins want to do something about it, and I don’t want to be the only one from the bigger teams to discuss this.
Bonjour a tous.
Bonjour a tous.

We've had a great week for the Herschel's 275th Birthday challenge, thank you to all of our processors and the teams who participated. We made a new record - reaching over 50 TFLOPS in theSkyNet POGS last night. Thank you everyone!
Now, for some results:
The winning team of the challenge is SETI.USA (http://www.theskynet.org/alliances/553), and the runners up were L'Alliance Francophone (http://www.theskynet.org/alliances/541). With a total 88,301,765 credits delivered to theSkyNet: POGS users during the challenge, we can't believe how much crunching you guys have managed for us. We have gold and silver Herschel trophies for all SETI.USA and L'Alliance Francophone participants respectively, and a bronze for everyone else who helped out. These will be available in your trophy cabinet on theSkyNet.org soon.
As for our side challenge that we set yesterday - that was won by the amazing tanos (http://www.theskynet.org/profiles/12212?locale=en), who had the highest RAC increase in the last 24 hours of the challenge. We'll be in touch for your address soon tanos so we can send you your prize.
An extra special thanks also needs to go out to Mumps [MM] (http://www.theskynet.org/profiles/9458) who had the highest total credit contribution to the challenge, we'll also send you out a pack Mumps, so watch out for our message.
Thanks again everyone, you've helped us out immensely. We can't wait to go through the galaxy data that's come in this week and see what's been found.
Until next time,
TheSkyNet Team

Certes Milkyway GPU, c'est mieux ... y aura peut-etre déjà moins d'amateurs...

The BOINC pentathlon (http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/22_en_Welcome.html) has chosen theSkyNet POGS as their marathon project this year - we're very excited that SETI-Germany and the team behind the pentathlon chose us and so to celebrate we thought we'd add a bit more to the fun. (http://www.seti-germany.de/blog/2014/05/boinc-pentathlon-additional-fun-competition-at-pogs-lego-prizes-on-offer/)
A word association game has been started on the POGS forum (http://pogs.theskynet.org/pogs/forum_thread.php?id=438), so jump on and get involved. At the end of the pentathlon we'll randomly choose two winners that have participated in the thread and are part of the pentathlon.
The prizes will be a $60 AUD Lego pack sent anywhere in the world (~40 Euros or $56 USD - thanks to pschoefer for the conversions). The winners get to choose whatever Lego they'd like - jump on the Australian Lego store (http://shop.lego.com/en-AU/) and see what you might choose if you win!
Looking forward to seeing all your entries in the game. (http://pogs.theskynet.org/pogs/forum_thread.php?id=438)

Hi theSkyNet POGS volunteers,
The International Astronomical Union is allowing astronomical organisations (like theSkyNet) to submit potential names for 20 exoplanet systems outside our Solar System.
We get to submit a name, and we'd like your help to choose it.
If you get suggesting with names (that follow the IAU rules, see below) on June 10th we'll compile all the suggestions and take a vote for what name to submit to the IAU on June 15th!
Put your suggestions in replies on this thread on the message boards. Don't forget to tell us which system your name suggestion is for, see the list linked below (and if you've got a reason why you think the name is good, then add that in too!)
The Rules
The name must be 16 characters or less in length, preferably one word, pronounceable, non-offensive and not too similar to an existing name of an astronomical object (you can check your suggested name at Sesame Service (http://cds.u-strasbg.fr/cgi-bin/Sesame) or the Minor Planet Centre (http://www.minorplanetcenter.net/db_search)).
The names must not include names of pet animals, names of a purely or principally commercial nature, names of individuals, places or events principally known for political, military or religious activities, names of living individuals or names protected by trademarks or other forms of intellectual property.
More details on the rules are on the IAU website: http://www.nameexoworlds.org/the_process.
So is a list of the 20 exoplanet systems that are up for naming: http://www.nameexoworlds.org/the_exoworlds.
Happy suggesting! I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with. 2 Jun 2015, 7:19:29 UTC · Comment

theSkyNet SourceFinder 2.0 (beta) Coming soon to a BOINC manager near you!
Ryan (our intern) and Alex have been working really hard to bring SourceFinder up and running on BOINC. We expect we will be announcing its beta availability in the new year! We have all the data ready to go, and most of the BOINC infrastructure is coded and online, we're just finishing up the final touches with an assimilator (that puts the results you guys will send back to us into a database) and a few other checks and quality controls through the system.
Thank you so much for your patience with this one, Ryan was only with us for one day a week, and has now officially graduated and taken a job in industry so he won't be around much at all anymore! Congratulations from all of us at theSkyNet Ryan, and good luck in your new job.
Bonjour,
"Le Faster Than Light Engine Challenge" ! :dialout:
-> Personnes super patientes et fans des moteurs-fusée (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moteur-fus%C3%A9e) et/ou des moteurs ioniques (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moteur_ionique) s'abstenir ! :D
- j'ai fait exprès de choisir un mode "change in rank" pour privilégier aussi les "petits" classés, pour lesquels les efforts persévérants sont bien rémunérés, même sur une courte semaine, même s'ils n'ont pas une grosse config' ; notez bien que je ne peux plus modifier les critères de classement ;

theSkyNet Transform 2 (T2)
You might notice something a little different about theSkyNet today - we have a whole new website for you. On the face of it it might seem like theSkyNet Transform 2 (T2) is basically the same as our old website, it looks similar and does all the things that the old one did, but it's been completely rebuilt from the ground up, giving us some amazing capabilities for future development (at a much faster pace than in the past two years) and more control over little day to day things.
The major addition to the new site is that our test project on BOINC, theSkyNet POGS, is now fully integrated - that includes credits, trophies and the ability to join in easily from within the site. We hope you'll give it a go either instead of, or together with, theSkyNet SourceFinder (theSkyNet that launches in your browser, based on the Nereus software.)
As for the rest of the site, there are two main differences you might notice right away:
1. Your credits will have increased by a factor of 10.
TheSkyNet T2 incorporates our BOINC project, theSkyNet POGS, into the site for the first time since it began testing late last year. To combine the BOINC credit systems with theSkyNet SourceFinder's we needed to work out a conversion factor that would make credit earnt between the two systems equivalent - it turned out this was quite simple, a factor of ten. This multiplication was applied to all credits earnt on theSkyNet SourceFinder (based on the Nereus technology).
2. Your rank in the ladders probably will have changed.
TheSkyNet POGS has been in testing on BOINC for almost a year and has grown larger than we thought a test ever would. So, combining the two groups together added over 3,000 theSkyNet members to the ladders, most of which have been processing theSkyNet data in testing for quite a few months.
Hey everyone,
As a lot of you noticed, there haven't been any workunits for POGS for about a week.
I've been told by Kevin this morning that POGS has finished processing all the galaxies he needs.
Next up, we'll be looking at reviewing all of the processed galaxy data and preparing it for actual use.
Kevin tells me that the next step is to use the processed galaxy data to train an auto-encoder neural network to classify galaxies based on their features. We'll have a gigantic amount of training data ready for this task, so the prospects of positive results seem high.
Additionally, any research papers that ICRAR publishes using this data will contain an acknowledgement to the work done by everyone who contributed to POGS.
The POGS and theSkyNet websites are going to remain up for the time being, but Kevin is also looking to shut them down once everything has fully wrapped up. This is mainly due to monetary issues - it costs more than $2,000 AUD per month to keep the POGS and theSkyNet services running.
So I'm sorry about how abrupt this is, but we're all done. Thank you everyone for your contributions, great or small. Kevin and I do appreciate everything you've done, and we'll be sure to put all the data to good use.
I'm glad to have been able to help manage this project, even if it's only been one day a week for the most part. The community here has always been a good one.
I can try and answer any questions anyone has in this thread - I'm sure there'll be some.
Thanks again for everything,
Sam
TheSkyNet was ICRAR’s first ever citizen science project. Since then, we’ve launched (and concluded) Galaxy Explorers, and will soon be launching beta testing for our latest citizen science program, Astro Quest.
Using the distributed computing power of thousands of computers located around the world, theSkyNet’s ‘SourceFinder’ project used a DuChamp algorithm to automatically tell the difference between background noise and real radio sources in observations from a radio telescope. The project proved that distributed computing is a real solution for processing large volumes of radio astronomy data and may help researchers maximise science returns from the next generation radio telescopes like the Square Kilometre Array.
After SourceFinder, we launched another citizen science project on theSkyNet platform. Named ‘POGS’, it combined data from Pan-STARRS1 (a telescope at Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii) with space-based telescopes, GALEX and WISE to generate a multi-wavelength galaxy atlas of the nearby Universe.
The results of this astronomically awesome distributed computing effort has allowed our researchers to measure the physical parameters (such as stellar mass, surface density and star formation rate) of 107, 985 galaxies! The results of this work will be published soon, so keep an eye on the ICRAR website for details.
As well as processing data for our astronomers, theSkyNet has helped us understand how to involve the community in our work through a citizen science project. We’ve had a great time with it and as we wrap this one up, we’d like to thank theSkyNet community for your time, enthusiasm, and commitment to science. We hope to have you on board for Astro Quest—keep an eye out for it!
Thank you from everyone that's worked on theSkyNet at ICRAR.
