Great idea. However, we will need a PS3 or at least a simulator to debugthe application and we will need a cross compiler in order to compile theapplication. Any hints? I will tell Johannes to check if it's possible.
The PS3 hardware would be able to run one QMC task on the PPC core, which would make quite a bad ratio between WU throughput and energy consumption. There is insufficient RAM to run more than 1 QAH task and the SPE cores are only fast working with single precision maths.I imagine that it would require huge efforts in program development, parallelizing the existing application and spreading the tasks amongst the cores in an ideal way, with the risk of still not having an efficient application then.Yoyo runs distributed.net, which runs even on ancient hardware. The requirements of dnetc are not near as high as those of QAH.PS3GRID has been developed on PS3 in 1st place and has then been ported to Linux. They already could have an eye on the requirements of their application when they designed it.Afaik. Folding had a lot of support from Sony and/or IBM, which one had to acquire for this project too, first for the analysis and later for the implementation. It might be possible to develop a PS3 application for QAH but it requires many ressources (developer time) and the question is still wether it's worth it (efficiency-wise) or not.
