Seasons greetings everyone!
Since you’ve been so good this year we have a very special present for you: a brand new project called 'Radio Galaxy Zoo'. We need you to help us discover black holes.
Earlier this year, Galaxy Zoo expanded to include the infrared. Now Radio Galaxy Zoo involves looking at galaxies in (yet) another light. This time we are asking you to match huge jets – seen in radio emission – to the supermassive black holes at the centre of the galaxy that produced them. This requires looking at the galaxies in infrared and radio wavelengths. These galaxies are not like our own, and your classifications will allow scientists to understand the causes of these erupting black holes and how they affect the galaxy surrounding them.
Get involved now at http://radio.galaxyzoo.org - and have fun discovering black holes in our Universe.
Plus, remember to check out the 2013 Zooniverse advent calendar for some fun things we've been up to in December: https://www.zooniverse.org/advent

Happy Holidays from Grant and the Zooniverse team!

Seasons greetings everyone!
Bonnes Fêtes de Fin d'Année à Vous Tous !

Today we launched Operation War Diary - our new citizen history project where we need your help to transcribe regimental diaries which describe events in the lives of British soldiers during the First World War. To get involved visit http://www.operationwardiary.org and follow the short tutorial.

These diaries contain the thoughts and observations of soldiers on the Western Front. They detail the location, movement and everyday activities of hundreds of thousands of individuals whose stories are otherwise unknown to us. With 1.5 million pages to go through, there are many amazing stories lying in these documents, waiting to be read.

By tagging people, places, and more on http://www.operationwardiary.org you can help our team of historians to begin to reconstruct the lives of the First World War for future generations. This is an incredibly important project and we’re very excited to be working with The National Archives and the Imperial War Museum to make it happen.

Keep up-to-date with all news from this project and more by following it on Facebook and Twitter

Thanks,

Rob and the Zooniverse Team

PS :

We haven’t forgotten the astronomers among you! Yesterday we launched a project built by our friends at the Space Telescope Science Institute, which uses Hubble Space Telescope data to classify star clusters in the Southern Pinwheel Galaxy, M83. It’s called Project Stardate and you can try it now at http://www.projectstardate.org

Hi,
We have a new space-based project: Disk Detective. We need your help to scour infrared data from NASA’s WISE spacecraft. Disk Detective is backed by a team of astronomers that need your help to look at data of stars to try and find dusty debris disks – similar to our asteroid field. These disks suggest that these stars are in the early stages of forming planetary systems.
To take part you have to visit www.diskdetective.org and look through flipbook-style sets of images made up of multiple-wavelength data from each star. You watch the object change as you move from shorter, optical wavelengths to longer infrared wavelength data.
Follow along for updates from the science team on the Disk Detective blog, on Twitter and on Facebook too.
In the meantime try it out at www.diskdetective.org
 Thanks,

Hi everyone,
As you can probably tell from the title of this message we have lots of news for you! Firstly, the Milky Way Project is back up and running with lots of new data. Get involved now at www.milkywayproject.org
We have also added some new data to Cyclone Center in the form of never-before-classified storms. Be one of the first people to look at them at www.cyclonecenter.org. In addition to this, the fine scientists behind Cyclone Center have submitted their first publication, based on the work of Zooniverse volunteers, to the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society!
One of the most exciting things for us at Zooniverse HQ is when we see the results of all your hard work, and we're delighted to tell you that Whale FM has also recently produced a publication of their latest results.
Finally, in a bid to bring citizen science to more people around the globe, we have been increasing our effort to translate our projects into other languages. So far it's going very well, with many projects already translated into multiple languages! If you would like to find out more about our translations or if you would like to help us translate your favourite project, check out this blog post.

That's all the news we have for just now. There will no doubt be more very soon. In the meantime, keep clicking at www.zooniverse.org :)

We're excited to introduce our new citizen science project: Asteroid Zoo! We've teamed up with Planetary Resources to ask you to help crowdsource the discovery of new Near Earth Objects (NEOs). Discovering new asteroids close to home not only helps us to locate and track potentially dangerous, Earth-impacting, hunks of rock - but it is also the start of a journey into space to try and mine asteroids for their minerals.

Asteroid Zoo is our new citizen science website that asks for everyone's help tracking down asteroids. We are using data from the Catalina Sky Survey and we think that if anyone can help find asteroids hidden amongst the stars and artefacts, it's the Zooniverse community. There's a lot if data to get through and we can't do it without you. You may remember Planetary Resources as the company who ran a successful Kickstarter campaign last year to launch a public space telescope, and as one of the first commercial enterprises aiming to try their hand at asteroid mining. We're excited to be working together to hunt for asteroids - and hope you will be too.

To learn more visit the Asteroid Zoo science page, or just dive in at www.asteroidzoo.org. You'll be shown a set of four images in sequence, which you can view and animate in different ways, and you have to try and spot the asteroid moving between them. It's rather addictive.

Happy hunting !

That's right! We have yet another new citizen science project for you to try out. It's called Floating Forests.
Researchers need your help to understand how kelp forests grow and change over time. Kelp is found in a huge fraction of coastal waters across the globe, and it is extremely important to the marine habitat. The forests are so large they can be seen from space, and we're asking you to look through satellite images and mark the kelp you can see in them. Read more about the science behind the project here and get involved now at www.floatingforests.org

Hi,
Today we welcome a new project (and a new species!) to the Zooniverse. Penguin Watch asks you to tag penguins in amazing images from around Antarctica. Find the project at www.penguinwatch.org
Penguin populations are declining but the harsh conditions of the Antarctic make monitoring them logistically challenging. Researchers from around the world have established a remote camera network to monitor penguin colonies across the Southern Ocean. By tagging images from these cameras on Penguin Watch, you can help scientists understand how and why penguin populations are declining – and how to best protect them.
Penguin Watch currently contains more than 175,000 images, so there is plenty to do. Your tags will be combined with the tags others mark on the same images, and a crowdsourced map of the penguins will emerge. This means that it doesn’t matter if you sometimes make mistakes! You can discuss the project with other volunteers, and the Penguin Watch researchers, on Penguin Watch Talk.
Penguins play an important role in the Antarctic ecosystem and are considered sentinels of change – any variations in penguin dynamics may reflect larger changes to the environment. Climate change, fisheries, disease, and pollution are all prime suspects in driving penguin population decline. Penguin Watch will help the researchers understand more.
To take part, visit www.penguinwatch.org and follow the short tutorial to get going with your first image. You can discuss images at talk.penguinwatch.org and you’ll find the project on Twitter and Facebook.
Thanks,
Rob and the Zooniverse Team

Salut,
 Merci,
 Rob et l'équipe Zooniverse

The Zooniverse is part of a competition to receive a grant to fund an entirely new type of crowdsourcing project, and now we need your help to make it happen!

Mazda are running the competition on their ‘Mazda Rebels’ website. The Zooniverse is in the running and, if we win, we plan to use the Mazda grant to create a Zooniverse ‘First Responders’ program. The aim is to use the power of the Zooniverse to help during a major humanitarian crisis, such as a future natural disaster. Together we've made major contributions to scientific research, from marking bubbles in the Milky Way to marking giraffes in the Serengeti. We think exploring and tagging images taken by satellites, and from the air, could provide similarly useful results in an humanitarian crisis, assisting organisations and first responders on the ground, who need more accurate information about where help is needed.
This is something we've been working on for a while, in an effort led by Galaxy Zoo researcher Brooke Simmons, and now we're ready to give it a try. As a global community coming together during a crisis, the Zooniverse could provide rapid assistance and even, possibly, save lives.

The competition itself features our own Robert Simpson in a short video outlining what we do at the Zooniverse and highlighting some different projects (you might also spot Galaxy Zoo scientist Brooke Simmons in her other capacity as a Zooniverse volunteer!). It’s a great video, and Rob - who is a TED Fellow this year - is up against four other TED Fellows, who each have their own projects. There is a public vote to determine who gets the grant, and there are only two weeks left to vote.

If you’re interested, go and watch the videos and vote for your favourite project at https://www.mazdarebels.com/en-gb/content/four-inspiring-ted-fellows-one-mazda-grant

Thanks,

Grant and the Zooniverse Team

Hey there,

Today we launched our latest citizen science project, and it's a real beauty!

On
Higgs Hunters we need you to look through data from the ATLAS experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider, where protons are smashed together at one billion kilometres per hour in order to create new particles and give us a better understanding of the building blocks that make up our Universe.

Specifically we are asking you to search through roughly 90,000 images from the ATLAS detector for tiny sub-atomic explosions caused when a Higgs boson 'dies', which some scientists think could generate a new kind of particle, previously undetected.  Begin your search for new and exciting particles now at www.higgshunters.org[

Thanks for your continued help and support,  Grant & the Zooniverse Team
